Excursion to Lake Tovel and visit to the Sanctuary of San Romedio
Among the Brenta Dolomites
Excursion to Lake Tovel
The largest natural lake in Trentino
The Lake Tovel is the largest natural lake in Trentino, located in the heart of the Adamello Brenta Nature Park. Its crystal-clear waters take on incredible shades of blue and green. Situated at an altitude of 1,178 meters in Val di Non, it was once subject to a unique natural reddening phenomenon, unparalleled in the world for its intensity and extent. This phenomenon gave rise to the Legend of Princess Tresenga, who, as the story goes, died here out of love for her people.
How to get there
The lake, nestled in a beautiful forest, is surrounded by the peaks of the Brenta Dolomites. A breathtaking landscape, fully immersed in nature, where the atmosphere becomes truly magical.
This is also because, during the high season, the access road to the lake is closed to traffic. In July and August, it is usually open up to the parking area near the “Capriolo” restaurant, where visitors can take a shuttle bus. Please check schedules and parking information on the official website of the Adamello Brenta Nature Park.
San Romedio, one of the most fascinating sanctuaries in Europe
Just over 15 kilometers from Lake Tovel, you can visit the San Romedio Sanctuary, undoubtedly one of the most unique in Trentino and all of Europe.
Its incredible location in the heart of a deep, wild gorge, perched atop a rocky peak, radiates an aura of solemnity and mystery. It is an extraordinary architectural complex consisting of five small churches built at different times, stacked on top of each other and connected by a steep staircase.
Since the 15th century, pilgrims have come here to offer votive gifts, some of great artistic and historical value, as a testament to the growing devotion to the Saint.
Itinerary
The sanctuary is easily accessible by car or shuttle bus from Sanzeno (about 45 minutes from Molveno).
For the more adventurous, it can also be reached via a scenic 45-minute walk along a stunning trail carved into the rock, starting from the road in front of the Rhaetic Museum in Sanzeno.
