Family trip: Stenico Castle and Rio Bianco Waterfall

A day for adults and children among waterfalls and castles

The imposing Stenico Castle has been observing the Giudicarie Valley from its picturesque position for more than 2,000 years.

This ancient place of power is located in the village of Stenico on a rocky outcrop overlooking the communication routes to the Giudicarie. It was built as a refuge for the Stoni, a proud Alpine population, after whom the village is named, who were exterminated by the Romans. In 1829 the Austrian Demanio (state property) established the offices of the Imperial Royal Judiciary of the Valley there.

The castle is accessed via a steep ramp that connects the square to the village of Stenico. The frescoes in the main halls are of considerable interest. It also preserves a valuable archaeological section devoted to local history and anexhibition of furniture, paintings, weapons and ancient tools.

Imposing and sparkling, let yourself be enchanted by the White Brook Waterfall

Starting from the castle, we recommend a nice walk in the woods: turning left you enter the S.P. 34 and reach the capitol of San Giuseppe (about 1 km away from the castle) near which you can admire the Valle dei Molini, so called because in ancient times there were mills, sawmills and forges there. A little further on, near the “House of the Park” starts the actual walk that climbs through the woods, reaching the so-called “Malea” waterfall. Crossing the wild Val di Laòn, crossing a small bridge, you reach the headwaters of the Rio Bianco waterfall. The tour route then, if you wish, goes into the gorge carved by the stream, an environment of great beauty.

Getting there

Distances: Molveno-Stenico: 18 km. From Molveno drive along S.S. 421 and after the village of Dorsino turn right onto S.P. 33 until you reach Stenico after about 5 km.
